Bought as a gift, I am sure she will love it!!
I received this free as a review copy, but that doesn't affect my objectivity I write for Catholic publications and nearly every new Catholic title comes through my door. It's rare that I like one enough to bother to review it on . This is the perfect children's missal. I'd say to give it as a First Communion gift, but a far better use would be to give it as a gift at the beginning of the year before First Communion. Why? Because then the child could use it for the year whenever he goes to mass, and thus learn to understand (and hopefully love) what happens there, so that on First Communion day he is truly prepared. The text of each mass prayer is on the right side pages, the explanations of each prayer (or action) on the left. I doubt most religious ed texts explain the mass in such a thorough and engaging way. The illustrations themselves are not mere decorations, but also teach the concepts of the mass. Last, the hard cover and gold edges make this book worthy of the texts it contains (unlike our flimsy disposable missallettes). My only suggestion is that they make one with a black cover as well. Or a red cover so it looks like the altar missal. Ages 7 and up.
Hard cover - but described as leather-bound - and binding already looks iffy in my opinion (lost stars for that).
To be fair, it is beautiful to look at and it does appear to have some material over it (?? leather?? - not sure). But the cover is hard and not flexible like leather-bound books that I know.
Would have preferred it if it was leather-bound - as I believe leather binding would hold the pages together longer.
This is a gift for my God-daughter - and knowing how children handle books, I wanted something that the binding would hold for a while. As I think hard cover books - no matter how tight when new - tend to loosen faster than leather over time.
We just received. I looked though it and it is exactly what I needed. This will help me teach our faith to my child. Thank you.
I was very skeptical when I ordered the missal since there is no preview for its content. After I received the first order, I bought 2 more. One for each child who just had a first communion. An important feature is that the missal is child proof.
Satisfaction guaranteed. No need to say more.
